To support its growth rate of more than 60% per year over the last few years, Cailabs, a French deep tech company with worldwide leadership in light shaping, is moving to new premises in Rennes. This move doubles the company’s surface area.

Premises adapted to strong growth and current technological challenges

The 3,500 m² building, located at 1 rue Nicolas Joseph Cugnot in Rennes, is Cailabs’ new headquarters. Since August 31, 2022, it has housed the company’s 62 employees.

Cailabs embarked on the project of constructing a building better suited to its business activity back in 2019. “Cailabs lacked laboratories, suitable technical rooms, production rooms and storage space to continue its development,” explained Jean-François Morizur, CEO of Cailabs. “We are also strengthening the team and are currently looking to hire 13 new employees: the move was becoming urgent!” he continued.

With the new premises, Cailabs has all the means to accelerate its industrialization and deployment capabilities in the telecommunications, laser machining, defense and space industries.

Installation of an optical ground station at Cailabs

Within the framework of the Keraunos project, supported by the French Ministry of the Armed Forces, the AID (Agence de l’Innovation de Défense) and the DGA (Direction Générale des Armées), Cailabs has designed and manufactured a first pilot ground station at its premises in Rennes, a key step in the project and also in the development of the SME.

The aim of the project is to implement and operate a complete optical link: from the satellite terminal, embedded in a nano-satellite designed and launched in low orbit by the company Unseenlabs, to the ground.

Cailabs is thus one of the first private European companies to own and operate a ground station. Since 2022, it has been experimenting with data reception via optical satellite telecommunications.

Expanding under optimal conditions

“We have spent the last 3 years in cramped conditions, spread over 4 sites in Rennes. Now we are all together in bright, user-friendly premises that are technically adapted to our business activity,” continued Jean-François Morizur.

While the official inauguration of the building will take place at the beginning of October, a reception will be organized for employees at the end of the month to thank them for their teamwork, which “allowed us to relocate quickly and efficiently”, concluded Jean-François Morizur.
